Nonprofit Friend: The David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust

Nonprofit Friend: The David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust | Wisteria

We first featured The David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust, a beloved organization to Wisteria’s co-founder Shannon Newsom, in our March 2014 catalog. The David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust (DSWT) is a nonprofit organization that has worked to protect wildlife and habitats in Kenya for the past 38 years. World-known for the success of its Orphans’ Project, the DSWT is the recognized authority on the hand raising and reintegration of orphaned African elephants—to date, they have successfully hand-raised over 190 elephants and many have been reintegrated into the wild.

Dr. Dame Daphne Sheldrick founded The David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust in 1977 in memory of her late husband, and the founder of Tsavo National Park, David Sheldrick MBE. David and Daphne’s work to protect wildlife in Kenya began in the early 1950s, with their Tsavo home soon becoming a haven for orphaned animals. As the wildlife situation worsened due to poaching, human-wildlife conflict, habitat destruction, and drought, the number of orphans in need grew significantly and the Sheldricks worked vigorously to successfully raise and rehabilitate orphaned animals.

The David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust has evolved into a multidimensional organization, working in-air and on the ground to watch over, care for, and protect all of Kenya’s wildlife. The DSWT has six conservation programs to carry out their mission; this is done through the Orphans’ Project, Anti-Poaching Teams, Mobile Vet Units, Aerial Surveillance, Saving Habitats, and Community Outreach.

Though this nonprofit organization has been successful with raising and reintegrating elephants into the wild, their job does not end there. The anti-poaching teams, medical units, and pilots of The David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust continue to ensure these ex-orphans and wild herds are kept safe and given the future they deserve.

Nonprofit Friend: Orphan Outreach

Orphan Outreach| Wisteria Non Profit Friend

Orphan Outreach is a nonprofit organization that helps connect and provide unconditional love to orphans in very practical ways, diligently working to better the lives of vulnerable children. The number of orphans and at-risk children in our world today is overwhelming, and the statistics alone fail to tell the full story of the innocent lives affected by disease, abuse, poverty, or neglect—those stories are the heart of Orphan Outreach.

Orphan Outreach serves more than 5,000 children annually by providing early intervention, education, and humanitarian aid. Through partnering with orphanages and Christian schools to provide expertise and funding to meet the physical, spiritual, emotional, and educational needs of orphaned and at-risk children in Guatemala, Honduras, India, Kenya, Latvia, Russia, and the United States. They also partner with individuals to serve these children through child sponsorships, prayer, advocacy, improvement projects, and mission trips.

India has a population nearly three times the amount of the United States living in one-third of the space. Introduce intense poverty, famine, drought, natural disasters, and AIDS, and you have a tragic scenario, and, most significantly, vulnerable children. At approximately 31 million, India has the largest number of estimated orphans. Orphan Outreach provides vital support for several important projects in India, including an orphanage for children with HIV and orphanages for children from extreme poverty, neglect, and abuse.

Recognizing the needs in India are overwhelming, Wisteria will donate to provide much needed food for orphanages in India.

We would like to partner with you, our customer, in an effort to provide necessary resources for Orphan Outreach to continue their endeavors. On October 10, 2015, Wisteria will Give 10% of your entire purchase to Orphan Outreach and you will Get 10% off your purchase. Use promo code OUTREACH2015 at checkout. Help out!

Nonprofit Friend: Lumin Education

Lumin | Wisteria Non Profit Friend

Guided by the Montessori philosophy of schooling, Lumin Education works to transform education by starting young, involving parents, and creating learning environments to inspire children from diverse cultural and economic backgrounds. Lumin Education was founded in 1978 for the specific purpose of proving that all children can succeed in school when we start young and involve parents.

From its humble beginnings of educating a single class of eight children, Lumin Education now has four campuses serving over 550 children and their parents each year in the Dallas area. Lumin Education’s programs include an intensive parent education program, daily Montessori classroom programs (toddler through third grade), After- and Before-School Care, The Summer School Program, The Reading Program, and The Playtimes Program—counseling to help children overcome social and emotional obstacles.

In neighborhoods struggling with poverty, illiteracy, and high dropout rates, Lumin Education’s third grade alumni graduate from high school at a rate of 95%, 89% of those graduates go on to attend college. For the last 7 of 8 years, Lumin students have earned the state’s Gold Performance Award for excellent reading skills, and in 2014 Southern Methodist University awarded Lumin Education with the Simmons Luminary Award for their commitment to improving people’s lives through education.

Before Cooper and Susanna were born, Shannon worked at Lumin East Dallas Community School (one of the four campuses) as an aide to the founder, Terry Ford, and as a helper in the Toddler House. We’re excited to once again extend a helping hand to this wonderful organization.

We would like to partner with you, our customer, in an effort to provide necessary resources for Lumin Education to continue their endeavors. On September 10, 2015, Wisteria will Give 10% of your entire purchase to Lumin Education and you will Get 10% off your purchase. Use promo code LUMIN2015 at checkout. Help out!

#365daysforchange

The idea is simple, really. Each month we share the story of an organization that’s making a difference in their community. Now it’s your turn. Share your good deeds using the hashtag #365daysforchange on Instagram, Facebook, or Twitter. Then follow along as we devote this month to honoring those good deeds and the people behind them.

Below you’ll find a note from founder and CEO, Andrew Newsom, explaining the history of our commitment to honoring those who make the world a better place:

“From the beginning of Wisteria, we wanted to honor people all over the globe who do amazing things in their communities. Shannon and I both started our careers in the nonprofit world after graduating from college and, while we now work in the for-profit world, we’re still inspired by these incredible works and want to tell the stories of those people in every thing we do.

In June, we’re highlighting a Burmese organization that helps support orphanages in their area. When we first met them over a year ago, we were so inspired by their story that we decided to give 10% of all our Burmese Rattan sales to them. That means, the lives they impact are all a result of the people who make these beautiful products, the hard workers at Wisteria who get them out there, you, the customer who purchases them, and the selfless people who work for the nonprofit.

It’s a global collaborative effort where everyone wins. Thank you!”

Every day is a great day for good deeds. Big or small, they all make a difference. We hope you’ll join us by sharing yours. 365daysforchange

Bethlehem Treasures

On the other side of the globe, the fair trade group who makes these pieces, organized by the Bethlehem Fair Trade Association (BFTA), works toward bettering the lives of those in their community. The purchase of each piece helps them to keep their mission alive—assisting artisans in marketing their products, developing business strategies, and providing a healthy work environment. 10% of the sales go to Bethlehem charities.

Wool Nativity | Wisteria

Around the Wool Nativity

Handcrafted, this Around the Wool Nativity set is skillfully made of wool from Palestine, bound together by Israeli artisans. These pieces are a representation of two nations, who have been at odds for centuries, coming together. This handmade nativity has captured the hearts of those of us at Wisteria, and we feel is a wonderful reminder of the true meaning of Christmas.

Olive Wood | Wisteria

Olive Wood pieces

Hand-carved with exceptional detail, each piece is carefully crafted from blocks of olive wood. The beautiful grains in the wood make each piece unique, as well as the time-consuming efforts put in by the artisans who craft them. Through the Bethlehem Fair Trade Association, each artisan is paid fairly for their hardwork and commitment to the art.

Holy Family Felt Nativity Scene | Wisteria

Holy Family Felt Nativity Scene

We feel this Holy Family Felt Nativity Scene really captures the spirit of the holiday season. This piece is crafted by L’Arche, a fair trade group of special needs felt-makers. Welcoming people of all backgrounds, L’Arche is an inter-denominational Christian community where 16 members have intellectual disabilities, known as “core members.” Advocates, as well as the BFTA, work to change policies to give core people more freedom and fair pay for their art.

We are proud to support the Bethlehem Fair Trade Association and their efforts to better the lives of the artisans involved in their community.
