Nonprofit Friend: Millions from One

Millions from One is a nonprofit organization created to provide clean water and antimicrobial shoes to those in need. With a clear vision of providing sustainable solutions that meet basic living needs, they work to build community, promote education, and provide hope to the hopeless all over the world.

Millions From One

Water is at the heart of a daily crisis faced by almost a billion of the world’s most vulnerable people, especially children. This crisis threatens life and destroys livelihoods on a devastating scale. Nearly 90 percent of all diseases in the world are caused by unsafe drinking water, inadequate sanitation, and poor hygiene. This is a silent crisis experienced by the poor and tolerated by those with the resources, technology, and power to end it. To save millions of lives by providing long-term clean water, along with education and hygiene training, to those most in need across the world, Millions from One’s current outreaches include drilling deep-water wells and the manufacture of antimicrobial shoes—both giving life and filling needs to those in desperate situations.

Why shoes? Over 3 billion people live on the equivalent of $2.50 or less per day, meaning that many of life’s basic needs go unmet. The majority of the world’s poor must walk where they go, and an estimated 2 billion people are currently afflicted with parasitic diseases, most preventable with the right shoes. Currently serving 59 countries, Millions from One is changing the lives of millions one at a time.

Millions from One

In 2014, we helped Millions from One build a deep-water well in Burundi. This year, we’ll help provide basic necessities, along with clean water and antimicrobial shoes, to an orphanage in Nepal that was first devastated and then destroyed by earthquakes. Millions from One recently adopted this orphanage—quickly finding a new building so the children were no longer living in makeshift tents. We hope our combined efforts, with your help, will allow this orphanage and the children who live there continue to be successful.

We would like to partner with you, our customer, in an effort to provide necessary resources for Millions from One to continue their endeavors. On March 10, 2016, Wisteria will Give 10% of your entire purchase to Millions from One and you will Get 10% off your purchase. Use promo code MILLIONSFROMONE16 at checkout. Help out!

Nonprofit Friend: Methodist Children’s Home Costa Rica

Nonprofit Friend: Methodist Children's Home Costa Rica | Wisteria

The Methodist Children’s Home is a Christian children’s home near San Jose, Costa Rica. In conjunction with local government agencies, it provides a safe, peaceful alternative to the overcrowded, state-run orphanages in San Jose. Ray and Lidia Zirkel, long-time Methodist missionaries, started the Children’s Home as an extension of their other ministries. The vision for the Methodist Children’s Home is to provide a nurturing and family-centered environment for children who otherwise would have no home.

In 2006, the Zirkel family was able to purchase a small farm located in Patio de Agua, Coronado. This property allowed them to have access to public roads, water, and utilities. In 2011, the first home was opened with welcoming arms to house children. With a vision to build five homes, an open-air chapel, a soccer field, a basketball court, and a playground, Methodist Children’s Home Costa Rica works diligently to provide a healthy, stable life for these children. In our February 2015 feature, Ray and Lidia Zirkel expressed that they would like to build a multipurpose building—a center for the children to gather and play. We are proud to announce that they broke ground this year and have begun building this much-needed space.

We would like to partner with you, our customer, in an effort to provide the necessary resources for Methodist Children’s Home Costa Rica to continue their endeavors. On January 10, 2016, Wisteria will Give 10% of your entire purchase to Methodist Children’s Home Costa Rica and you will Get 10% off your purchase. Use promo code MCH2016 at checkout. Help out!

Nonprofit Friend: The David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust

Nonprofit Friend: The David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust | Wisteria

We first featured The David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust, a beloved organization to Wisteria’s co-founder Shannon Newsom, in our March 2014 catalog. The David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust (DSWT) is a nonprofit organization that has worked to protect wildlife and habitats in Kenya for the past 38 years. World-known for the success of its Orphans’ Project, the DSWT is the recognized authority on the hand raising and reintegration of orphaned African elephants—to date, they have successfully hand-raised over 190 elephants and many have been reintegrated into the wild.

Dr. Dame Daphne Sheldrick founded The David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust in 1977 in memory of her late husband, and the founder of Tsavo National Park, David Sheldrick MBE. David and Daphne’s work to protect wildlife in Kenya began in the early 1950s, with their Tsavo home soon becoming a haven for orphaned animals. As the wildlife situation worsened due to poaching, human-wildlife conflict, habitat destruction, and drought, the number of orphans in need grew significantly and the Sheldricks worked vigorously to successfully raise and rehabilitate orphaned animals.

The David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust has evolved into a multidimensional organization, working in-air and on the ground to watch over, care for, and protect all of Kenya’s wildlife. The DSWT has six conservation programs to carry out their mission; this is done through the Orphans’ Project, Anti-Poaching Teams, Mobile Vet Units, Aerial Surveillance, Saving Habitats, and Community Outreach.

Though this nonprofit organization has been successful with raising and reintegrating elephants into the wild, their job does not end there. The anti-poaching teams, medical units, and pilots of The David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust continue to ensure these ex-orphans and wild herds are kept safe and given the future they deserve.

We would like to partner with you, our customer, in an effort to provide necessary resources to support the work of The David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust. On December 18, 2015, Wisteria will Give 10% of your entire purchase to support the work of The David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust and you will Get 10% off your purchase. Nonprofit Friend: STAIRS Program

The STAIRS Program is a nonprofit tutoring program for low-income, disadvantaged middle school students in the Dallas area. Through various programs, STAIRS Program works to enhance students’ math, English, and study skills in order to admit these students into private, charter, or magnet college-bound high schools. Recognizing that not all families can afford these costly prep programs, STAIRS provides this training for free. This allows financially disadvantaged students a chance to achieve competitive scores on the ISEE and SSAT admissions test required for college-bound high schools. STAIRS Program also helps with the financial aid and application process.

The STAIRS Program also offers a mentorship called Stepping Out Program, pairing high school students from partnered college-bound high schools and pairs them with middle school students. The purpose of this program is to help tutor, guide, and inspire middle school students to achieve a college-bound environment. This program consists of communication between mentor and student throughout the school year—helping academically and socially. The Stepping Out sessions occur after Saturday classes, allowing mentors and students to bond through community service projects and fun-filled activities.

Nonprofit Friend: Orphan Outreach

Orphan Outreach| Wisteria Non Profit Friend

Orphan Outreach is a nonprofit organization that helps connect and provide unconditional love to orphans in very practical ways, diligently working to better the lives of vulnerable children. The number of orphans and at-risk children in our world today is overwhelming, and the statistics alone fail to tell the full story of the innocent lives affected by disease, abuse, poverty, or neglect—those stories are the heart of Orphan Outreach.

Orphan Outreach serves more than 5,000 children annually by providing early intervention, education, and humanitarian aid. Through partnering with orphanages and Christian schools to provide expertise and funding to meet the physical, spiritual, emotional, and educational needs of orphaned and at-risk children in Guatemala, Honduras, India, Kenya, Latvia, Russia, and the United States. They also partner with individuals to serve these children through child sponsorships, prayer, advocacy, improvement projects, and mission trips.

India has a population nearly three times the amount of the United States living in one-third of the space. Introduce intense poverty, famine, drought, natural disasters, and AIDS, and you have a tragic scenario, and, most significantly, vulnerable children. At approximately 31 million, India has the largest number of estimated orphans. Orphan Outreach provides vital support for several important projects in India, including an orphanage for children with HIV and orphanages for children from extreme poverty, neglect, and abuse.

Recognizing the needs in India are overwhelming, Wisteria will donate to provide much needed food for orphanages in India.

We would like to partner with you, our customer, in an effort to provide necessary resources for Orphan Outreach to continue their endeavors. On October 10, 2015, Wisteria will Give 10% of your entire purchase to Orphan Outreach and you will Get 10% off your purchase. Use promo code OUTREACH2015 at checkout. Help out!
