Non Profit Friends

Nonprofit Friend: STAIRS Program

The STAIRS Program is a nonprofit tutoring program for low-income, disadvantaged middle school students in the Dallas area. Through various programs, STAIRS Program works to enhance students’ math, English, and study skills in order to admit these students into private, charter, or magnet college-bound high schools. Recognizing that not all families can afford these costly prep programs, STAIRS provides this training for free. This allows financially disadvantaged students a chance to achieve competitive scores on the ISEE and SSAT admissions test required for college-bound high schools. STAIRS Program also helps with the financial aid and application process.

The STAIRS Program also offers a mentorship called Stepping Out Program, pairing high school students from partnered college-bound high schools and pairs them with middle school students. The purpose of this program is to help tutor, guide, and inspire middle school students to achieve a college-bound environment. This program consists of communication between mentor and student throughout the school year—helping academically and socially. The Stepping Out sessions occur after Saturday classes, allowing mentors and students to bond through community service projects and fun-filled activities.

Nonprofit Friend: Orphan Outreach

Orphan Outreach| Wisteria Non Profit Friend

Orphan Outreach is a nonprofit organization that helps connect and provide unconditional love to orphans in very practical ways, diligently working to better the lives of vulnerable children. The number of orphans and at-risk children in our world today is overwhelming, and the statistics alone fail to tell the full story of the innocent lives affected by disease, abuse, poverty, or neglect—those stories are the heart of Orphan Outreach.

Orphan Outreach serves more than 5,000 children annually by providing early intervention, education, and humanitarian aid. Through partnering with orphanages and Christian schools to provide expertise and funding to meet the physical, spiritual, emotional, and educational needs of orphaned and at-risk children in Guatemala, Honduras, India, Kenya, Latvia, Russia, and the United States. They also partner with individuals to serve these children through child sponsorships, prayer, advocacy, improvement projects, and mission trips.

India has a population nearly three times the amount of the United States living in one-third of the space. Introduce intense poverty, famine, drought, natural disasters, and AIDS, and you have a tragic scenario, and, most significantly, vulnerable children. At approximately 31 million, India has the largest number of estimated orphans. Orphan Outreach provides vital support for several important projects in India, including an orphanage for children with HIV and orphanages for children from extreme poverty, neglect, and abuse.

Recognizing the needs in India are overwhelming, Wisteria will donate to provide much needed food for orphanages in India.

We would like to partner with you, our customer, in an effort to provide necessary resources for Orphan Outreach to continue their endeavors. On October 10, 2015, Wisteria will Give 10% of your entire purchase to Orphan Outreach and you will Get 10% off your purchase. Use promo code OUTREACH2015 at checkout. Help out!

Nonprofit Friend: Lumin Education

Lumin | Wisteria Non Profit Friend

Guided by the Montessori philosophy of schooling, Lumin Education works to transform education by starting young, involving parents, and creating learning environments to inspire children from diverse cultural and economic backgrounds. Lumin Education was founded in 1978 for the specific purpose of proving that all children can succeed in school when we start young and involve parents.

From its humble beginnings of educating a single class of eight children, Lumin Education now has four campuses serving over 550 children and their parents each year in the Dallas area. Lumin Education’s programs include an intensive parent education program, daily Montessori classroom programs (toddler through third grade), After- and Before-School Care, The Summer School Program, The Reading Program, and The Playtimes Program—counseling to help children overcome social and emotional obstacles.

In neighborhoods struggling with poverty, illiteracy, and high dropout rates, Lumin Education’s third grade alumni graduate from high school at a rate of 95%, 89% of those graduates go on to attend college. For the last 7 of 8 years, Lumin students have earned the state’s Gold Performance Award for excellent reading skills, and in 2014 Southern Methodist University awarded Lumin Education with the Simmons Luminary Award for their commitment to improving people’s lives through education.

Before Cooper and Susanna were born, Shannon worked at Lumin East Dallas Community School (one of the four campuses) as an aide to the founder, Terry Ford, and as a helper in the Toddler House. We’re excited to once again extend a helping hand to this wonderful organization.

We would like to partner with you, our customer, in an effort to provide necessary resources for Lumin Education to continue their endeavors. On September 10, 2015, Wisteria will Give 10% of your entire purchase to Lumin Education and you will Get 10% off your purchase. Use promo code LUMIN2015 at checkout. Help out!

Nonprofit Friend: Amani Children’s Foundation

Amani Children's Foundation| Wisteria Non Profit Friend

We first featured Amani Children’s Foundation as a Nonprofit Friend in our catalog in the winter of 2010. Since then, this inspiring organization has continued to grow and change the lives of abandoned Kenyan children. To date, over 1,600 infants have been cared for and Kenyan families have adopted nearly all.

Jane and Chad Stephens founded Amani Children’s Foundation in 2004, in partnership with New Life Home. Their mission is to care for abandoned HIV+ babies, pairing them with families who provide forever homes where these children can flourish. During Amani’s beginning, HIV was still new to Kenya, and the idea of caring for HIV+ children seemed dangerous and almost futile. There was no other place in Kenya for the children who were abandoned and found HIV+, and Kenyan volunteers and staff were committed to caring for these children—even if only for the few hours they had left to live. Remarkably, most of the babies did not die. In fact, they thrived and expatriate volunteers began arriving and adopting the children. As Kenyan adoption law began to be shaped and as the new constitution was put into place, Kenyan families began adopting.

From first graders who celebrate their birthday with a Kenyan “birthday buddy” to university students who sponsor events, Amani is proud of its creative, nontraditional fundraising. Kenya’s Kazuri Beads partners with this nonprofit to creatively craft jewelry to sell, donating the proceeds to the Amani Children’s Foundation. Volunteers across the country host a wide array of cultural and artistic events on behalf of this wonderful organization—and we’d like to join! In fact, one of Shannon and Andrew’s long-time friends, Mary McNamara, has been one of these dedicated volunteers at both New Life Home in Kenya and in Cleveland selling beads.

We would like to partner with you, our customer, in an effort to provide necessary resources for the Amani Children’s Foundation to continue their endeavors. On August 10, 2015, Wisteria will Give 10% of your entire purchase to the Amani Children’s Foundation and you will Get 10% off your purchase. Use promo code AMANI2015 at checkout. Help out!

Nonprofit Friend: Juntos Servimos

Since 1999, Dr. Nancy Rodriguez and Larry Cox have worked in and around the community of Matamoros, Mexico. Juntos Servimos supports the efforts of Dr. Nancy and Mr. Cox to bring physical and spiritual wholeness to families impacted by extreme poverty and violence in northern Mexico. Together they founded a refuge center, Casa Bugambilia, where individuals—particularly children—struggling with disease, disability, and abuse can receive medical attention, food and water, shelter, and education. While much of the border has maintained a level of calm, Matamoros has not. Though shoot-outs, kidnapping, and extortion are common, a compassionate response is provided 24-hours a day, seven days a week.

Dr. Nancy and Mr. Cox have recently begun expanding their efforts to Juarez, Mexico, in hopes to build a healing community as they have in Matamoros. Though peace has been re-established in Juarez, much healing is needed. It’s estimated that 37% of the population lives in extreme poverty.

Since its founding in 2004, Juntos Servimos has raised over $1.5 million. All efforts are on a volunteer basis.

We would like to partner with you, our customer, in an effort to provide necessary resources for Juntos Servimos to continue their endeavors. On July 10, 2015, Wisteria will Give 10% of your entire purchase to Juntos Servimos and you will Get 10% off your purchase. Use promo code JUNTOS2015 at checkout. Help out!
