When Wisteria asked me and my lovely and talented co-workers/partners in crime, D Home Associate Creative Director Jamie Laubhan-Oliver and D Magazine Staff Photographer Elizabeth Lavin, to create a space “we’d want to live in” using their knock-out gorgeous furnishings and accessories, we immediately agreed. Then the fighting began. Kidding. But there was a lot of, ahem…compromising. We are, after all, three type-A, mildly bossy, definitely opinionated creatives with slightly different aesthetic sensibilities. Collaborating on a magazine is one thing. But harmoniously designing our collective “dream space” is an entirely different enterprise.
So we decided to conjure a fictional resident for our space. A backstory if you will. We’d set out to create a slightly moody, highly personal New York loft for an artist. Then we pulled inspiration images, fleshed out room dimensions, selected paint, and (by far the best part) “shopped” for the perfect furnishings from Wisteria to fill the room. Then, to add the “personal” element, we packed up our cars with our own art, books, and accessories — all meaningful, all collected over time.
On the big day we styled, arranged, rearranged, agreed, disagreed, and ate cookies (lots). And when the last item was in place, we were so smitten that we all wanted to recreate the entire scene in our own homes… Jamie said it best when, just before leaving, she looked over her shoulder at the room and said, “this really looks like us.”
Here are a few of our favorites from the photo shoot…
